Glarus Industry

The mountainous surroundings of Glarus complemented industrialisation. Slate works were important in the 147th century. Cotton spinning became important in the 18th century, complementing traditional woolen spinning. Industrialisation gradually brought cotton printing, hydroelectric plants and later metal and machinery factories. These were followed by paper mills.

Dairy farming and cattle breeding were not replaced by industrial advances. Cattle graze on mountain pastures is a common picture in the canton of Glarus Cattle breeding and dairying are important on the mountain pastures.
